St. Paul's Parish Athletic Program
Girls' Varsity Basketball

Though sports practices and games provide venues for skill development, the real reason children participate in sports is the opportunity to play with other children their own age. When the team is comprised of your classmates and friends, the interest in playing is magnified. Add in coaches that have diligently worked with the children for years and consistently demonstrated sportsmanship and compassion and the opportunity becomes irresistible. Such has been the experience for the eighth and seventh grade girls representing St. Paul School in the CYO Girls Varsity basketball league this year. Capably stewarded by Tom Maley and John Wandishin, the SPS basketball teams have again flourished with a vibrant spirit.

The interest in basketball this year led to the creation of two equal teams comprised of seventh and eighth graders. The Blue Team, coached by John Wandishin, Bob Henry, and Rico Barbet, benefits from the talented play of Brittany Barbet, Amanda Bautista, Katherine Henry, Victoria Hoffman, Kim Rogers, Nicole Rosetty, Alex Scavone, and Jenna Wandishin.

The Gold Team, coached by Tom Maley and Jamie Weeks, benefits from the talented play of Emily Bamford, Bridget Maley, MaryKate McCarthy, Maryanne McGoorty, Shannon Mickey, Jennifer Rota, Kara Weeks, and Frances Zappone.

Deep into a sixteen game season, both teams practice together twice a week and play their games in the CYO Gym in Trenton before boisterous crowds of parents, siblings, and friends. As usual, the competition has been vigorous and the experience healthy. For while the play has been crisp, unselfish, and aggressive, the girls have handled wins and losses with poise and equanimity. Though the girls have more games ahead, the season has already proven to be an enormous success.
